Massasoit CC 12, 2 – New Hampshire Tech 0,1

The Warriors swept a doubleheader from the New Hampshire Technical Institute Lynx, in a pair of games played at Louis R. Colombo Field in Brockton, MA. In the opener the Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead with the help of several defensive miscues by the Lynx. Dave Tar pitched five scoreless innings, giving up only four hits and striking out nine batters. Offensively, Tyler Andrade had a pair of hits including a double and a triple. Tyler has really been on a tear since coming back from Florida. Joe Walsh and Travis Ritchie both had a pair of hits and each drove in a run. Ben Monterio  had a pair of runs batted in as he reached base all the times he came to the plate via a double and two walks. The final was 12-0 after five innings due to the 10 run “slaughter” rule.

Game two couldn’t have been more different. The Lynx tightened their defense and allowed on two runs, both scored in the second inning by the Warriors on rbi singles by Trevor Packard and Tyler Andrade. Ben Monteiro was in complete command on the mound as he gave up only five hits while striking out five batters. Ben is now 2-1 on the season. Chris Roumbakis played outstanding shortstop and the Warriors played errorless ball on the day. Solid pitching and great defense will keep you in every game that you play.

The Warriors return home for a 4:00 pm game against Naval Prep, on Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

Ben Monteiro, pitched a complete game five hitter, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

UCAP 12 – Massasoit CC 4

The Warriors traveled to Groton, Ct to take on the UCAP Pointers. Shane Holmes took the mound, and cruised through the first three innings. In the fourth with two outs, a routine fly ball was hit to the outfield and misplayed, four runs later, the Warriors were trying to play catch up. Joe Walsh hit a two run home run to move the team within two. It was the second of Joe’s three hits on the day. UCAP tacked on two more runs, leaving Shane with two earned runs to show for six innings of work. It was a solid effort for the freshman left-hander. In the seventh inning a two out error in the infield loaded the bases and one swing later we were chasing eight runs.

I told the team prior to the game that we were playing the top team in Region XXI and any mistakes would come back to haunt us. Those two, two out errors accounted for eight unearned runs. On the bright side Tyler Andrade had his second multi-hit game in a row and is really punishing the ball, as he and Joe Walsh led the team offensively.

Tomorrow we play a twin bill with New Hampshire Tech. Dave Tarr and Ben Monteiro will take the hill for the 11:00 am double header.

Joe Walsh had a three hit day for the Warriors, including a two run home run in the fourth inning against the UCAP Pointers.

Massasoit CC 10 – Dean College 8

The Warriors picked up their third win of the season over the Dean Bulldogs in a game played in Franklin, Mass. The bats finally came alive and the Warriors established a 10-1 lead going into the seventh inning. Then the walls came tumbling down as an infield grounder was misplayed, a ground ball thrown into right field allowed runners to advance and the outfield airmailed a cut to second allowing runners to score. Before you could say “hold on” the Bulldogs plated six runs. The sloppy defensive play overshadowed strong pitching performances by Ethan Kelley, Brandon Quirk, Luke Nagle and Dave Tarr. What was supposed to be an inning to prep for Saturday, turned into a save situation for Dave in the bottom of the ninth. But a win is a win, it’s just that this win should not have required us to use four arms to seal the victory.

The upside is the hitting began to come around. Tyler Andrade had four hits including two doubles, he scored twice and knocked in three runs. Luke Nagle had a pair of hits, two walks and was hit by a pitch and scored three times. Chris Roumbakis walked three times and had a single. When you take into consideration that Dean handed us ten walks and hit three batters, we really should have scored a lot more runs. We let them hang in the game and it almost came back to bite us. The Warriors have to realize the game has three parts, defense, offense and pitching. We need to be balanced in all three areas.

Friday we travel for another Division II matchup with UCAP. Shane Holmes will have the ball and the challenge. Saturday we take on New Hampshire Tech for an 11:00 DH for our first home games of the season.

Tyler Andrade had a big day for the Warriors, with four hit, three runs batted in and scoring twice in a 10-8 win over Dean College.
