Jake Stearns

Massasoit CC – 4 Marshalltown CC 1

Jake Stearns pitched an outstanding game for the Warriors,as he hurled a  two hit, complete game victory of the Marshalltown Tigers (IA). Marshalltown scored their only run in the second inning without recording a hit. The the lead-off hitter was hit by a pitch, stole a base and scored on a pitch that handcuffed the catcher. The score stood at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Evan McSherry stroked a single to left field, Jon Hurley followed with a walk and Alex Carey reached on an error. Kevin Huscher then launched a double to plate two runs wth the Carey scoring on an overthrow.  The three run eruption was all the Jake needed as as he was pretty much flawless over the last five innings of the game. He capped off the performance with a 1,2,3 ninth. He struck out the first hitter and induced two fly ball outs to pick up his first victory of the season.

The Warriors play a twin bill tomorrow, facing the Ontario Blue Jays at 10:00 am and Westchester CC (NY) at 4:00 pm.

Scott Anderson

Warriors win 10-8

Scott Anderson pitched four solid innings of relief, allowing an unearned run and striking out three in a 10-8 win over the Ontario Blue Jays. The Warriors found themselves in a 7-2 hole when Scott entered the game. The sophomore right-hander hung tough and kept the Warriors hopes alive. In the top of the fourth inning Alex Carey drove in two runs wth a double and Tyler Morini followed with his own two bagger to plate Alex to bring the Warriors within a run.

In the top of the sixth inning, Pat Matthews led off with a walk, Carey was hit by a pitch and Morini reached base for the fourth time on a base on balls. Bryan Dwyer proceeded to rip a ball down the third base line to plate the go ahead runs and give the Warriors their first win of the 2016 season.

After a day off, the Warriors play Marshalltown CC (IA) on Wednesday in a noon time game.

Liam Richmond

Kirkwood CC 5 – Massasoit CC 0

The Warriors lost a 5-0 game to Kirkwood as Tyler Morini had the only hit in the game. The real story of the game was the outstanding job that Liam Richmond did in a four inning relief stint. Liam only allowed one hit and a hit batter in while striking out three hitters. In a word, he was dominant. His fastball was generating swings and misses and gave the Warriors a chance to climb back into the game.

The Warriors play tomorrow at 4:00 pm again the Ontario Blue Jays.

Alex Carey

Ontario Blue Jays 9 – Warriors 8

The Warrior bats finally came alive. Alex Carey had a three hit day and drove in three runs.  Dylan Ashburn, Bryan Dwyer and Evan McSherry all had a pair of hits.  Warrior pitchers however struggled to find the strike zone and as a result Ontario had eight runners reach base without swinging the bat. Five of the free passes scored.

The Warriors had a four run lead going into the sixth inning but gave up two runs in the top of the sixth and three more in the seventh. Evan McSherry lead off the bottom of the seventh with a single, but ended up stranded at first base after a pop up and two fly ball outs.

Massasoit faces Kirkwood CC tomorrow in a 7:00pm game under the lights at Holman Stadium.

Zack Reid

Warriors drop their first two in Vero Beach, FL

Zack Reid pitched an absolute gem in a 1-0 loss, to Hagerstown CC,  in the Warriors season opener. Reid gave up only two hits, the lone run was unearned and resulted from a pair of Warrior errors. Zack spotted his breaking pitch and commanded his fastball in an 82 pitch effort. Kevin Huscher and Jim Lawless had the two Warrior hits.

Jake Stearns started game two against the UCAP Pointers, he turned in a 8K ,1 BB, five inning outing. The Warriors  were chasing three in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Jack DeCoste and Kevin Huscher reached on walks. They both scored when Bryan Dwyer scorched a line drive to left field that was misplayed, allowing all three runners to score. The lead was short-lived as UCAP took advantage of some shoddy defense to retake the lead in what turned out to be a game final score of 7-4. Dwyer had a solid game with two hits, a rbi and a run scored.

The Warriors take on the Ontario Blue Jays tomorrow in a 4:00 pm contest.

Ramping up practices…

The pitching staff is rounding into shape as the Warriors find themselves 27 days away for heading down to Vero Beach, Florida. The staff has moved up to 80 pitch sets with impressive results. The sophomore pitchers, Mike Nader, Zach Reid, Jake Stearns, Scott Anderson and Liam Richmond are working hard to set an example for their freshman counterparts. They know how different college baseball is from high school baseball. You don’t have the luxury of eating the 7,8, and 9 batters alive. Most college nine hole hitters were in the top five spots of their high school lineup. At this level you have to earn every out you record. These sophomore hurlers feel they have a lot to prove and so far their hard work in the off-season appears to be paying off.

Coach McDermott is working tirelessly with the hitters. Batters had the opportunity to swing against live pitching on Wednesday. This will help them adjust a little quicker when we take the field in March.Fundamentals like bunting and hitting behind the runner are being stressed repeatedly so that if there is a run to be had, we can try and take advantage of the opportunity.

The Warriors continue to get ready…

Workouts have been moving along and as the hitters work on their swings, the pitchers are building up arm strength. The only drawback relative to preparation is struggling to get everyone to practice. We have only had one practice where the entire team has been present, so there are definitely gaps in our preparation. Hopefully this will become less of a problem as we move forward. We are just about six weeks away from first pitch, and so far weather hasn’t been a big factor as it pertains to school closings. There is an excellent chance we can get the outfielders outdoors tomorrow and take some fly balls. That would be a real plus, as that is the one thing you can not replicate inside.
