Working to get better…

The Warrior’s had a very solid practice today. The infielder’s and catcher’s all had multiple defensive reps. The infielders worked on their exchanges and I can see them becoming more effective and disciplined . They aren’t “just doing it,” they are consciously working to get better. I think that this will pay real dividends when we get down south and begin our season. The catchers did some throwing and blocking drills. Coach Manders put them through some drill work on effective blocking and explained the importance of keeping everything in from of them. I talked about the importance of anticipating that every change up and every curve would be in the dirt, that way they minimize the chance of being fooled on balls that are “spiked” or dive on them. The outfielders capitalized on the time they had in the cage, to work on their swings. Coach Zackrison has worked the pitchers very hard in terms of band work and core exercises. Since we are not real “deep” in terms of numbers on the mound, it’s going to be important that our pitchers can work into the late innings without fatiguing. I can see the effort put in by the pitching staff and in a word I’m impressed. They will start to throw off the mounds on Saturday, so that’s always in indicator that Vero Beach, Florida can’t be that far away!

Indoor Workouts Begin….

The Warriors began their indoor workouts on January 14th. Practices now will be held on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1:30- 3:45 pm and Saturday mornings from 8:30 – 11:330 am.

The coaching staff is working on conditioning and arm strength as the team begins its preparation for its annual spring training trip to Florida. The Warriors will leave for the Vero Beach Sports Village on March 14, 213, where they will play a ten game schedule against other junior colleges and junior varsity squads. As soon as the Florida schedule is released it will be posted both on the College web site and in this blog.

The Warriors are carrying a 22 man squad for the 2013 season. There appears to be balance and depth and the competition for playing time should be intense.
